Our area Watamu......
Watamu is an area of stunning natural beauty.
Watamu is an area of stunning natural beauty. Designated a UN Biosphere area (an area worthy of special protection) due to it's Marine Park, salt water/mangrove creek, the adjacent Arabuko Sokoke Forest (the largest Indigenous Coastal Forest left in East Africa!) and it's quiet beaches, used by nesting Turtles. The seas around
Watamu were designated as Marine Parks and Reserves in 1963 - the first Marine park to be established in Eastern Africa. The dive sites are within the Marine reserve and all have been buoyed for over 18 years, to prevent anchor damage on the reefs. We have approximately 20 different dive sites and have a policy here of only one boat per dive site!
The outer fringing reef, where the diving takes place, lies 1 ½ kms. off and parallel to, the beautiful, unspoiled white beaches. The top of the reef lies between 7-14
metres, dropping down to a sandy bottom at between 22-30 metres. The Indian Ocean is well known for it's vast numbers and different species of fish - Watamu is no exception and with no spear fishing etc, the fish ignore the divers and carry on their daily lives as normal - great for observing natural fish
behavior. Dives here offer up anything from the smaller stuff such as beautiful Nudibranchs and Leaf Fish to the amazing critters such as Frog fish, Octopus and crocodile fish. Not forgetting all the reef fish such as Angel Fish, Butterfly fish, Groupers, Snappers, Parrot Fish etc. Last but definitely not least, there is always the chance of seeing the larger critters such as
marine life, Barracuda, White Tip Reef Sharks, Manta Rays, Whale Sharks and dolphins!
